Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine whether ecological determinants have the long-term effects on depressive symptoms and life satisfaction and to investigate whether these relationships were different between middle-aged and elderly women. To do this, the first (2006) and sixth (2016) waves of Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KloSA) were used and we conducted multi-group structural equation modeling analyses for 3,543 older adults aged 45 or older based on the first wave. As for results, first, marital status, annual household income, and subjective health status affected both depressive symptoms and life satisfaction. Second, there were statistically significant group differences between middle-aged and elderly women in the effect of religion on the first life satisfaction and the effects of the number of adult children whom they meet at least once a week and the number of organizations or clubs that they participate in on the first depressive symptoms. Third, depressive symptoms and life satisfaction had lagged effects over time for both middle-aged and elderly women. Fourth, compared with middle-aged women, the effect of the sixth depressive symptoms on the sixth life satisfaction was greater for elderly women. Based on these findings, practice and policy measures for depression prevention and life satisfaction improvement were discussed.
